Paul Duffen has backed Phil Brown to remain in charge of Hull despite his resignation as chairman.

Duffen stepped down on Thursday morning just 24 hours after false rumours had circulated suggesting Brown had been relieved of his managerial duties.

The Tigers had to release a statement to insist that Brown had not been sacked but Duffen's decision has only increased the uncertainty about the club's future.

Duffen enjoyed a close working relationship with Brown and he believes the under-fire boss can come through a difficult period.

He thinks results will start to improve now a change has been made and is confident Hull will avoid relegation.

Asked if Brown would survive, Duffen told Sky Sports News: "I think he has got the ability to do so.

"It is like anything. You want to shake up the snow globe and if I walk off the stage and somebody else comes in and brings in a new catalyst, it can absolutely help the club get back the confidence they need.

"I absolutely believe in Phil Brown and I do believe he will survive, in terms of managing Hull City in that they will be in the Premier League this time next season."

Duffen fully expects former Hull chairman Adam Pearson to return to the KC Stadium following his departure from Derby earlier this week.

He said: "I think it is very likely now there will be some new life coming into the club, maybe Adam Pearson will come back and it will give the club the chance to settle down and go in a new direction.

"I am not the club spokesman. It would seem very logical and very sensible and I would be surprised if Adam doesn't come back and play some part in the football club."
