Kevin Campbell put his injury nightmare behind him to steer Everton
into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Campbell grabbed the winner in the 71st minute as the First Division side
began to wilt in this replay.
Crewe had taken the lead through Dean Ashton only for the impressive Tomasz
Radzinski to cancel it out.
Radzinski then released Campbell for his vital goal, the big striker getting
away from Efe Sodje to fire a shot beyond keeper Clayton Ince.
Campbell's joy was understandable. He had missed three months of the season
with a succession of injuries including a back problem.
Everton now face Middlesbrough in the last eight - but only after a determined
second half display.
Crewe ran the show in the early stages and Ashton got away from his marker
only to send his effort high into the crowd.
Then David Vaughan tried to release Rob Hulse but the pass was slightly
over-hit and Everton breathed a sigh of relief.
Ashton got away from Alan Stubbs only to scuff his shot past the post. A
minute later Ashton stung the hands of keeper Steve Simonsen with a rasping
25-yard drive.
Stubbs then got in a timely challenge on Hulse after Vaughan's reverse pass
had split the Everton defence.
Everton found themselves on the back foot and Dave Walton headed wide from a
good position.
Crewe took the lead after 23 minutes through Ashton, a striker linked with a
number of FA Barclaycard Premiership clubs.
Ashton went deep to win the ball off Mark Pembridge, raced forward and showed
a cool head to send a shot into the corner beyond keeper Simonsen.
It was no more than Crewe deserved on the balance of play and Hulse almost
added a second. Everton were again guilty of ball watching but his effort found
the wrong side of the target.
Simonsen then had to react quickly to tip over a driven cross from Shaun Smith
from the left.
Everton, however, drew level a minute before the break when Radzinski got away
from his marker to head home a cross from Pembridge.
The ineffective Ginola was replaced at half time by Thomas Gravesen while
David Unsworth came on for Gary Naysmith, who had taken a knock in the first
half.
Everton looked far more positive and Hulse hacked away a corner from Swedish
midfielder Niclas Alexandersson.
Sodje then raised his hands to Radzinski and was lucky to escape a booking as
Crewe suddenly found themselves under pressure.
Everton had a scare in the 57th minute when Hulse flicked in a header, only
for Pembridge to clear off the line.
Two minutes later there was a similar situation at the other end with Sodje
blocking Stubbs's effort from inside the area.
Crewe looked to have been stung by that Everton goal shortly before the
break.
But they were beginning to find their men again as the game entered the
crucial final stages.
Ashton and Hulse were proving a handful up front and Everton knew they had to
be on their guard.
Crewe boss Gradi then brought off Dave Brammer, replacing him with Neil
Sorvel.
Campbell then had the final word to make it four straight defeats at Gresty
Road for the home side.
