Steve Bruce is desperate to bring Crystal Palace striker Andrew Johnson back to Birmingham for £6million.
The 24 year old began his career at St Andrews but left to join the Eagles as part of the deal that saw Clinton Morrison join the Blues in 2002.
Johnson's prolific streak in the Premiership last season convinced Bruce to offer Crystal Palace £5million for his services in the summer, a bid that was swiftly rejected.
Despite accusing Johnson of being a persistent diver Bruce now sees his nose for goals, and penalties, as the Blues' best chance of staving off relegation.
Palace chairman Simon Jordan is certain to dismiss any bid under £10million and will be confident in Johnson's desire to stay in south London.
Jordan made Johnson the most highly paid player in the Championship over the summer and sees the striker as key to the club's promotion hopes.
However, Bruce will rely on the impending World Cup to lure Johnson back to the Midlands with both individuals knowing a bounty of Premiership goals is the striker's best hope of a place in the England squad.
