Michael Hughes' second-half strike capped Wimbledon's comeback in the South
London derby at Selhurst Park and sentenced Charlton to their sixth consecutive
defeat.
Neil Redfearn's 25-yard shot had stunned the home side just before the
half-hour mark and promised to bring an end to Charlton's miserable run.
But the Dons dug deep, and thanks to an equaliser from Jason Euell just four
minutes later and Hughes' stunning finish, the Addicks have collected just one
win in their last 10 games.
However Wimbledon boss Joe Kinnear will not be happy with the form of Scotland
international goalkeeper Neil Sullivan. It took a long time for the Dons' last
man to wake from his post-Christmas slumber.
The normally-assured Sullivan was far from the form that has alerted
Manchester United and Aston Villa and the insecurity spread like wildfire
through his defence.
Straight from the kick-off Sullivan dropped a harmless looking Shaun Newton
cross at the feet of Steve Brown. Fortunately for Kinnear's men, centre-back
Dean Blackwell was able to clear.
Minutes later the Scotsman called for a distant ball, leaving his centre-half
Chris Perry at Charlton striker Steve Jones' mercy.
Jones fluffed his chance but in the 24th minute, the frontman again slipped
his marker to fire wide from the edge of the area. Five minutes later though
came the Addicks' reward for their early pressure.
Yorkshireman Redfearn picked up a cross-field ball from 30 yards out and
stroked a breath-taking shot round the static Sullivan.
Rather than give Charlton the lift they needed to end their miserable run,
however, the goal seemed to breathe new life into the Dons
Within five minutes the ever-promising Euell had equalised. Among a crowd of
defenders the England under-21 international reacted first to a Hughes cross to
fire home from eight yards.
Back in the game, Wimbledon stepped up the pace and former Charlton striker
Carl Leaburn headed across goal to set up Marcus Gayle only for Sasa Ilic to put
on a goalkeeping master class.
The brave keeper plucked the ball from Gayle's feet and hoisted a long ball
forward.
Newton gave chase along the right and put in a useful cross which seemed
destined to bring about a goal as once more the ball eluded Sullivan.
But with both Mark Kinsella and Jones rushing goalwards in the six-yard box,
somehow Wimbledon captain Robbie Earle stuck a foot in the way to clear off the
line.
The second half brought about a necessary change, with Dean Blackwell going
off for Alan Kimble. And it was the substitute's contribution which was the
source of the goal.
His long pass to Leaburn saw the Dons frontman lay-off to Hughes on the right.
As harmless as his position seemed to Ilic, it was as dangerous as had been
Redfearn's before.
The Irishman spotted Ilic off his line and fired home to put Wimbledon in
front.
While Charlton powered forth at every opportunity they could rarely find the
target, highlighting Alan Curbishley's strange decision to drop both Andy Hunt
and Clive Mendonca.
For Sullivan, though, the day ended as it had begun - with a blotted copybook.
His 90th minute booking capped off a poor performance. He will be thanking Chris
Perry and Ben Thatcher for their immense contribution.
