Charlton's faltering promotion challenge took another jolt when they were held by QPR at a packed Valley.

Looking for their first victory in six matches, Charlton controlled the early part of the game but were often let down by a poor final cross.

Rangers keeper Lee Harper was tested in the third and 10th minutes by Bradley Allen and Mark Kinsella respectively.

But Rangers were dangerous themselves on the break and Andy Petterson was forced to save at Gavin Peacock's feet in the eighth minute and the on loan Mark Kennedy twice went close during the first period.

It was against the run of play when Rangers opened the score in the 22nd minute, Peacock slotting home a penalty following a clumsy tackle by Mark Bowen on Paul Murray.

Incredibly, of the 25 penalties Charlton have conceded in nearly six years, 24 had been put away and the other was hit high and wide.

John Robinson replied with a good header, inches wide, in the 24th minute and it was the Welsh international who equalised three minutes from the break, sweeping the ball past Harper from eight yards after Keith Jones had knocked on a Shaun Newton cross.

Charlton applied most of the pressure after the break but both teams had their chances to wrap up the points.

Harper performed well to keep out a curling Jones shot and late in the game saved a tricky close range Robinson shot.

Newton's effort hit the side netting but the miss of the game came in the 67th minute when defender Phil Chapple weakly shot straight at Harper from only three yards.

Rangers, who deserved their point for a gritty defensive performance, also had their moments in rare breakaways.

Iain Dowie and substitute Kevin Gallen both missed good chances and Petterson had to be at his best to tip over an excellent Kennedy free kick in the 73rd minute.
