Charlton missed a great chance to consolidate their promotion challenge with a
below-par performance against struggling Bury who now have not won for 15
matches.
Although Charlton extended their unbeaten home run to 12 matches it was
probably their worst showing of the season, one they will wish to forget.
The Londoners showed anything but promotion form in the first half and
struggling Bury had plenty of possession.
During a dreadful opening half Bury keeper Dean Kiely was only called on twice
to save good efforts from Mark Kinsella.
Mark Bright and Shaun Newton missed chances but generally high scoring
Charlton were comfortably held at bay by the Bury defence.
Bury also had their moments with Paul Dalglish, on-loan from Liverpool, going
close with an angled shot and Paul Butler forcing a good save from Andy
Petterson.
Charlton continued to make little headway after the break against a resolute
Bury defence.
Newton, sent clear by Steve Brown, shot narrowly over in the 55th minute but
this was only an isolated piece of goalmouth action.
And the Londoners themselves survived another tricky moment when a testing
Dalglish cross was desperately deflected to safety by Steve Brown.
As Charlton continued to make no impression, manager Alan Curbishley withdrew
Bradley Allen and Matty Holmes, bringing on two-goal mid-week hero Steve Jones
and John Robinson.
Following the changes, Charlton did improve marginally but the football was
poor to the extreme with neither goalkeeper having to make a save.
For much of the time it was up and under stuff with both teams getting a point
apiece in a match which neither team deserved to win.
