Even two lucky goals could not hoist West Ham off the bottom of the Premiership table against Charlton at The Valley, as they conceded four and slumped to their 13th defeat in 24 games.

In a bruising London derby, Glenn Roeder's men netted when Edouard Cisse went to shoot and Richard Rufus appeared to get a touch and lob his own keeper, and then with a fluke deflection.

Despite their bad fortune, Alan Curbishley's side wrapped up a fully-deserved win by netting four times, including a magnificent 25-yard free-kick from Claus Jensen.

The Hammers took the lead in the 19th minute. Addicks centre-back Rufus tackled Cisse as he tried to shoot 16 yards out - but he succeeded only in looping the ball over Dean Kiely and into his net.

Charlton deserved their 42nd-minute equaliser, scored when Jensen sent a breathtaking 25-yard free-kick whistling past David James and into the top right corner.

And three minutes later, Scott Parker latched onto Jason Euell's tidy pass and dispatched his shot past James from 12 yards.

Roeder's weary-looking troops conceded their third goal in 12 minutes when Parker drilled Gary Breen's clearance into the bottom right corner

The Hammers were thrown a lifeline in the 61st minute when Michael Carrick's shot took a wicked deflection off Sinclair and span into the bottom corner of the net.

But Charlton scored their fourth in the last minute when Radostin Kishishev netted his first goal for the club from close range after James saved from Jonatan Johansson.

It all added up to a miserable night for the West Ham new boys - ex-Addick Lee Bowyer, who was his usual aggressive self, and Les Ferdinand.

Early on, after Bowyer tangled with Shaun Bartlett right in front of the home dug-out, the ex-Leeds midfielder barged Parker over the advertisement hoardings and into the crowd - and turned to show home fans his name on the back of his shirt.

Charlton looked the more threatening and Jensen beat Steve Lomas with 12 minutes on the clock - but his pull back evaded Euell.

But it was Bowyer who, as so often in his controversial career, was the main talking point.

He squared up to Parker with 16 minutes gone and the pair shoved each other away. Referee Eddie Wolstenholme booked both players.

West Ham grabbed a freak goal in the 19th minute. Bowyer poked the ball towards Cisse, and as he attempted to shoot from 16 yards, Rufus slid in and scored a nightmare own-goal, lifting the ball over Kiely.

Carrick was lucky not to put through his own net at the other end three minutes later.

Bartlett's cross was intercepted by Cisse - but he fired the ball straight at Carrick and it rebounded a yard wide.

The game was in danger of boiling over now, with Charlton first-team coach Mervyn Day racing to the touchline and screaming at ref Wolstenholme after Bowyer clattered Parker again and escaped unpunished.

Ferdinand then reacted furiously after being brought down by Kishishev, who was booked.

Euell unleashed a fizzing 25-yarder on the half hour, with the ball smacking into the net support a foot wide of James' goal.

Charlton levelled in the 42nd minute, through a magnificent Jensen free-kick.

Christian Dailly fouled Bartlett 25 yards out and Jensen produced a quite brilliant set-piece for his fifth goal of the season.

And three minutes later, Parker raced onto Euell's precise pass and fired past James from 12 yards.

And West Ham's woes got even worse in the 52nd minute when Jensen's free-kick from the left was headed away by Hammers centre-back Breen.

The ball fell to Parker on the edge of the area and he drilled a fine shot into the bottom right corner.

West Ham's fans responded by turning on their team, chanting 'Roeder out' and 'We need a new back four'.

Roeder's men grabbed a lifeline in the 61st minute thanks to another lucky goal.

Ferdinand laid the ball square to Carrick, 20 yards out, and his shot deflected wickedly into the bottom right corner, giving Kiely no chance.

West Ham strung a decent move together in the 76th minute, with Sinclair and substitute Nigel Winterburn setting up Lomas to test Kiely from 20 yards.

Sinclair sent a bicycle kick two yards wide as the Hammers finally mounted a period of pressure.

The England midfielder also poked a yard wide with four minutes left.

But Charlton scored their fourth in the last minute when Kishishev netted his first goal for the Addicks from close range after James saved from Johansson.
