Bolton's inability to win at home in the Premiership continued with a
frustrating goalless draw against Charlton.
Wanderers dominated the game and should have won, but were also indebted to
two excellent saves by Jussi Jaaskelainen that meant they at least took a point
from the encounter.
The days when Bolton were on top of the Premiership, beating Liverpool and
Manchester United, are now merely fond memories of a glorious start to the
season.
The focus has already shifted back to top-flight survival and Wanderers need
to win home matches such as this to ensure the season does not end in
disappointment - they have not won at the Reebok in the Premiership since
beating Liverpool on August 27.
They also need to find someone other than Michael Ricketts to score the
goals.
The 23-year-old began the match with 10 league goals, making him third-top
scorer in the Premiership behind Thierry Henry and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
Wanderers could do with a out-and-out goal-poacher, as they created a host of
chances against Charlton without managing to put one away.
The first chance though fell to the visitors, and only a minute had elapsed
when Kevin Lisbie spurned a glorious chance to score the Premiership's 10,000th
goal.
He had an opportunity to head over Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen but the
Finn just managed to palm away his effort.
With nine minutes gone, Per Frandsen set the Bolton pulses racing by slipping
neatly past two challenges with some close-control and then firing just too high
from 20 yards.
After 20 minutes, Ricketts, so fast and strong, burst past Jorge Costa and
though the angle was narrow, struck a powerful shot that beat Dean Kiely for
pace but cannoned back into play off the crossbar.
Jaaskelainen provided the best moment of the first half when Jason Euell's
brilliant pass found Lisbie onside and racing clear.
The young striker did everything right and kept his shot hard and low, but
somehow Bolton's flying Finn managed to dive and get a hand to the ball and save
a certain goal.
Wallace's sharp run into the penalty area looked like it might pay dividends
for Bolton but Ricketts poked wide of the target from a good position.
The same pair combined a minute later, as Ricketts broke down the left and
swept a cross over that the diminutive Wallace could not quite get on top of,
and headed well over the bar.
Bergsson then squandered an excellent chance to take the lead.
The Bolton skipper had created the chance with a stylish stroll forward out of
defence but when Kevin Nolan's ball reached his feet, he could only slice a shot
high and wide.
A spell of Bolton pressure early in the second half saw Nolan find Gardner,
who sent two Charlton players the wrong way before driving in a low left-footed
shot that Kiely clutched firmly with Ricketts poised to pounce on any slip.
Nolan then had the crowd on their feet when he swivelled onto Gardner's header
and volleyed a superb shot that just cleared the bar.
Charlton survived a goalmouth scramble and soon afterwards Ricketts headed
wide when N'Gotty floated over a dangerous cross from the right.
Ricketts' position as crowd favourite looked in danger when he twice gave away
possession needlessly in the middle of the field, but Charlton were unable to
capitalise.
There was a chance for the visitors though, when N'Gotty felled Jensen just
outside the 'D'.
The Dane took the free-kick himself and it needed the fingertips of
Jaaskelainen to prevent Charlton going in front.
There was more wastefulness when Gardner curled a cross over Kiely's head and
Wallace, inexplicably, tried to head back to Ricketts rather than go for goal
himself.
The only other significant point of the match was a near-faultless display by
referee Chris Foy of St Helens, making his Premiership debut.
