CHARLTON ATHLETIC REPORTS 1999-2000

Charlton 0 Huddersfield 1

Clyde Wijnhard's first half goal ended Charlton's bid to seal their expected return to the Premiership.

Dutch striker Wijnhard struck a 25th-minute volley to deny Alan Curbishley's side the victory they needed to guarantee promotion to the top flight.

Charlton's promotion can still be secured this weekend but only if Ipswich and Barnsley fail to win their respective matches.

Charlton controlled the game for long periods but wasted a string of chances to take lead.

Leading scorer Andy Hunt should have opened the scoring on five minutes when he raced clear on goal but could only blast into the side netting.

John Robinson then volleyed inches wide of goal before Mathias Svensson's close-range effort was well blocked by Huddersfield keeper Nico Vaesen.

Charlton continued to press and Mark Kinsella then saw a shot from distance whistle inches over the crossbar.

But Huddersfield began to settle in midfield and Chris Beech almost broke the deadlock on 20 minutes but he dragged his shot wide of goal.

Five minutes later Wijnhard struck for the visitors when he was left unmarked at the far post to volley home Scott Sellars' cross.

Charlton regained control in midfield and only a smart save from Vaesen denied Svensson from hitting an equaliser five minutes before the break.

Two minutes after half-time Newton shot straight at Vaesen and then sliced another effort high and wide minutes later.

Huddersfield began to counter attack with menace and Chris Holland came close to doubling their lead with a 20-yard shot which flew just over.

Beech then saw a fierce drive pass the wrong side of the post.

On 68 minutes Huddersfield again survived when Ken Monkou headed a Robinson cross against his own crossbar and the ball fell into the arms of Vaesen.

Hunt then wasted another chance when he volleyed tamely at Vaesen before substitute Scott Parker's 18-yard header drop agonisingly wide of goal.

With 10 minutes left Svensson raced clear on goal but he chose to shoot early and Vaesen was again able to save.

Then Vaesen produced two excellent saves to keep out a Richard Rufus header and Svensson's well-placed shot.
