Charlton restored their 13-point lead at the top of the First Division with a
comprehensive victory over Grimsby.
Four headed goals were enough to keep Alan Curbishley's side on course for an
instant return to the Premiership.
Midfielder Shaun Newton opened the scoring after seven minutes with a header
into the top corner after good work on the right from Mathias Svensson.
Richard Rufus and Svensson both went close to increasing Charlton's lead as
Grimsby struggled to contain the First Division leaders.
Newton was then denied a second goal by an excellent save from Danny Coyne in
the Grimsby goal.
The visitors were then denied an equaliser when Chris Powell cleared off the
line from Kingsley Black's 25-yard free-kick.
On 54 minutes Charlton finally doubled their lead when Newton crossed from the
right for Svensson to head home his first goal for the club following his
January move from Crystal Palace.
Six minutes later Andy Hunt made it 3-0, heading home his 22nd goal of the
season as Charlton began to make their dominance pay.
Mark Kinsella went close with a spectacular overhead kick before Scott Parker
saw his 85th minute drive tipped round the post by Coyne.
But from the resulting corner Carl Tiler climbed above the Grimsby defence to
power a far-post header into the back of the net for Charlton's fourth goal.
