CHARLTON ATHLETIC REPORTS 1999-2000

Charlton 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0

The Charlton express rolls on. Two second half goals gave the Addicks their eighth consecutive league victory before a capacity crowd of over 20,000.

Once the home side took the lead in the 48th minute Charlton at long last began to play like potential champions. Graham Stuart scored his sixth goal of the season after inventive play by Martin Pringle gave him the easiest of opportunities.

From that moment on Charlton stepped up a gear, raising their game and making a comeback from Wolves look increasingly unlikely.

Wolves' keeper Michael Oakes was beaten again in the 69th minute when the Charlton skipper Steve Brown, on a rare foray forward, struck a crisp shot from outside the penalty area.

Oakes, especially in the first half, had performed heroics in the visitors' goal, keeping out two goal-bound efforts from the prolific Andy Hunt.

Graham Stuart, ably assisted by Andy Todd in the heart of the midfield, began to dominate proceedings.

Wolves' reply was to push more men forward, but even in their desperation they could not make any inroads.

Paul Simpson did hit the woodwork for the visitors with a well struck free-kick from 20 yards, but this was a rare attack of note for the men in gold in the second half.

The game had opened brightly for the visitors who so very nearly took the lead through Ade Akinbiyi and Steve Sedgeley in the opening exchanges.

In the first half Michael Branch had shown his top flight pedigree, causing anxious moments in the Charlton defence with his pace down the right flank.

The three points rightly belonged to Charlton for their almost complete control of the second half.

Having travelled this path before, few would bet against the Valley hosting Premiership football next season.
