Alan Pardew admits he has been disappointed by the reaction of some of his players since they were relegated from the Premiership.
The Charlton manager is facing up to life in the Championship next season after his side were relegated following defeat to Tottenham on Monday night.
Pardew has warned his players that their attitudes will need to improve if they are to become promotion contenders next year.
Ahead of their weekend encounter at Liverpool, he said: "I will be looking at individual players because I think it is a test of your character. You have been relegated and I think there is a certain way to deal with that.
"We are carrying two or three younger players. I have watched the training ground this week and there have been one or two who have disappointed me in all honesty. And also one or two made me change my opinion of them and cared more than I thought.
"This is the sort of scenario we are in."
Javier Mascherano could face Pardew today, and the Charlton manager admits he failed to get the best out of him at West Ham.
Pardew was boss at West Ham at the start of the season, and was caught up in the excitement of duo Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano arriving in east London.
Mascherano made just seven appearances for the Hammers though, and it is only since his move to Liverpool in January that he has begun to shine.
He is now on the brink of Champions League glory on Merseyside, but Pardew conceded he did not use him to the best of his ability.
Pardew added: "Certainly Javier needed to find the pace of the Premiership and unfortunately for him and perhaps me his first involvements in games for West Ham, we didn't win.
"Whether that was acceptance of him or the acceptance of the other players of him, it made it difficult.
"I feel you get the best out of Javier in a team that retains the ball at a greater technical level and he was always going to flourish in that type of team.
"Liverpool is well suited to him. They have technical players all over the pitch and his influence on that squad will grow. The unfortunate thing for myself and Javier was that perhaps we didn't have enough time.
"But I thought in the best team I have managed, in terms of individuals, Mascherano would be in there.
"You don't play for Argentina in that role unless you are a world-class player. But there is an adjustment to the Premier League and to the country and there is an adjustment to a different playing style which we had at West Ham to what he was used to in Argentina.
"Without saying we played a more direct route, we couldn't retain the ball as well as some Premiership clubs do. And whenever he was in a team that was able to do that, he was going to flourish. I am very pleased for the success he has enjoyed at Liverpool.
"I am hoping his feelings are not dented by the fact I didn't give him many chances."
Goalkeeper Scott Carson will not be able to face his parent club, so Darren Randolph is set to start.
