Bradford boss Jim Jefferies is involved in a three-way tussle for Mechelen
striker Joris van Hout as he bids to make his first signing of the summer.
After spending the last four months clearing out the Bradford squad in
preparation for life in the First Division next season, Jefferies is now ready
to start reversing the trend.
A dozen players, including the likes of Stan Collymore, Dan Petrescu, David
Hopkin and Lee Sharpe have all left Valley Parade this term, with Jefferies
under orders to slash the wage bill from £13million to £5million.
There are still likely to be a few more players leaving during the close
season, including Benito Carbone and Dean Saunders, but Jefferies is ready to
begin buying to build the squad he wants.
Van Hout has already been watched by Jefferies and assistant Billy Brown, with
the 24-year-old having scored seven goals this season for Belgian side Mechelen
who, like Bradford, are poised to be relegated from their Premier Division.
But another Belgian club and one from Holland are known to be interested, with
Van Hout likely to cost no more than £500,000.
Jefferies said: "Discussions have already taken place with his (Van Hout's)
agent, but the lad is wanting to see what the situation with his club is at the
end of the season.
"I think he is interested in coming to England, but we will have to hold
further talks with his agent."
