Bolton gained a vital four points on their nearest play-off rivals with a 1-0
win over struggling Bristol City at the Reebok Stadium, but Colin Todd's under
pressure team will have gained much more confidence.
Apart from a desperate closing 15 minutes Wanderers dominated the relegation
threatened visitors.
It was only their second win in 11 games and Bolton have only managed two
goals from their last four - but they could have doubled that tally in the
opening 15 minutes, firing in efforts from all areas.
Defender Neil Cox went first on five minutes screwing just wide of the target.
Bob Taylor, Michael Johansen, Claus Jensen and Per Frandsen also went close.
But it was Icelandic hit-man Eidur Gudjohnson who broke the deadlock after
seven minutes after an inch-perfect set up. Johansen sent a searching ball to
Taylor at the far post whose precision header gifted Gudjohnson a dream start as
he toe poked home from seven yards.
City were limited to chances on the break, top scorer Ade Akinbiyi's darting
runs into the box posing the biggest threat.
But Bolton never looked threatened and defender Cox missed a cast iron chance
three minutes from time, when he decided to cross instead of shoot from just 10
yards.
After the break Bolton continued their all out assault, Taylor forcing a
superb diving save from Andersen as he twisted in a shot from ten yards.
But Bristol looked better value in the second half with some tight, accurate
passing in midfield carving routes through Wanderers defence.
Bolton looked visibly tired later on, allowing substitute Greg Goodridge an
easy shot on 84 minutes which blasted just wide, but were still dangerous on the
break, Gudjohnson's last ditch attempt to make it safe literally playing right
into Andersen's hands with a weak header from Taylor's cross at the far post.
