Bolton lost more ground in their race for promotion against Greater Manchester
rivals Stockport County, but Dean Holdsworth threw away a golden opportunity to
steal a share of the points.
Referee Graham Laws gave a dubious penalty four minutes before half-time when
Bolton striker Bob Taylor crashed out in the Stockport box, but 'keeper Carlo
Nash pulled off a superb reflex save from Holdsworth.
With one point from their last three games, Bolton's promotion chances are
fast slipping away, and Stockport added insult to injury through left-back Colin
Woodthorpe.
Woodthorpe, out of position on the left wing, exposed massive holes in
Wanderers' defence when he pounced on 75 minutes with a 20-yard rocket to finish
off Bolton.
After a bright start, Wanderers struggled when the Hatters strike-force
combined brilliantly on 22 minutes.
Tony Ellis scored, but it was down to top scorer Brett Angell, who proved just
as adept as provider with an inch-perfect through ball to Ellis leaving him a
clear run on goal.
After Holdsworth's blunder, it was left to Bob Taylor to equalise four minutes
after the restart. Taylor both set up and finished, releasing Michael Johansen
on the right wing before connecting with the Dane's cross in the goalmouth.
Bolton rallied after their goal, Johansen stealing in with an identical move
two minutes later, this time to substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen. But it was in front
of goal where Wanderers struggled all afternoon and true to form, the
youngster's first touch let him down.
Jamaican Ricardo Gardner went close with two ferocious strikes on 55 and 73
minutes, but it was Woodthorpe's sucker punch which left Wanderers playing catch
up.
