Marlon Harewood emerged as West Ham's FA Cup hero with the extra-time winner that booked the Hammers a quarter-final trip to Manchester City next Monday.

Harewood expertly clipped home the winner from Yossi Benayoun's cross in the 96th minute to secure West Ham their first win over Bolton this season at the fifth time of asking.

Last Saturday Bolton steamrollered a makeshift West Ham side 4-1 at the Reebok Stadium, but Hammers boss Alan Pardew brought his big guns back.

Nevertheless, against a resolute Bolton side it still took a fortuitous own goal to gift them the lead and an extra-time strike to seal the win.

Nicky Hunt's attempt to clear Harewood's 10th-minute cross crashed against goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and rebounded into the net.

Kevin Davies hauled Bolton level after half an hour with a vicious, swerving drive from outside the West Ham box.

Despite both sides enjoying chances - Harewood and Matthew Etherington for West Ham, Davies and Kevin Nolan for Bolton - neither side could conjure up the breakthrough in normal time.

This was as stark a clash of styles as exists between two Premiership clubs - West Ham's neat interplay and short passing in contrast to Bolton's direct, percentage football.

Bolton have had their critics but they are an effective unit and West Ham have struggled to cope against them this season. Bolton knocked West Ham out of the Carling Cup, and won both league meetings.

West Ham captain Nigel Reo-Coker returned from illness while Benayoun, Dean Ashton and Harewood all started after missing Saturday's defeat as the Hammers reverted to their first choice line-up.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce made two changes from the weekend and went into the game with just one recognised striker in Davies.

West Ham were uncomfortable at the back as Bolton took the direct route - but it was the visitors who made the first real defensive blunder. And it gifted the Hammers an early lead as Jaaskelainen failed to prevent the ball going after Hunt's clearance hit him.

It was a comical own goal but probably no less than West Ham's clever early enterprise had deserved.

Under the lights at Upton Park the competitive juices were in full flow and after Nolan and Etherington had squared up, Harewood was booked for backing into Jay-Jay Okocha and Tal Ben Haim cautioned for chopping down Etherington.

Gary Speed wasted an opening in the West Ham box when his first touch was too heavy and carried the ball dead.

Ashton then tested Jaaskelainen for the first time - there was nothing he could have done about the own goal other than perhaps coming off his line quicker to claim the cross.

Ashton jinked onto his left foot and unleashed a low curler from 20 yards that Jaaskelainen did well to punch clear.

Bolton continued with their percentage football of long balls and shots from distance and the Hammers struggled under the high ball.

Stelios Giannakopoulos unleashed a drive across goal that flew high and wide before West Ham's general indecision allowed Davies the time and space he needed to rifle in Bolton's equaliser.

Clumsy defending allowed Nolan to square the ball. Danny Gabbidon stood off for too long and Davies' vicious shot swerved past the helpless Shaka Hislop.

Bolton enjoyed a spell of dominance but they required another smart save from Jaaskelainen, this time off Benayoun, to keep them level at the interval.

After the restart Bolton were snappier in the tackle, hungrier for the ball and pounced on a succession of loose passes from West Ham.

Stelios linked up neatly with Okocha but the Nigerian's swerving drive from the angle of the West Ham box nestled into Hislop's side-netting.

Harewood then wasted two excellent opportunities inside a minute for West Ham before the Hammers worked their best chance of the second half.

Jaaskelainen blocked Reo-Coker's glancing header but Etherington could not dig the ball out from under his feet and Ben Haim cleared with an excellent tackle.

Nolan unleashed a first-time drive over the bar but neither side could manufacture a breakthrough until five minutes into extra time.

Etherington picked out Benayoun and Harewood clipped his shot home from the near post.

Davies, who had already placed a header over Hislop's bar, fired a volley in the same direction before Ashton produced a dramatic goal-line block to preserve West Ham's lead.

Substitute Bobby Zamora looped a simple header over the bar but it was no matter - West Ham had broken their Bolton hoodoo to reach the last eight of the FA Cup.

The winning goal was followed by a flare being thrown onto the pitch.

The flare, billowing blue smoke, did not strike any of the players and was kicked off the edge of the pitch by a home player.
