Gary Speed and Kevin Nolan missed good chances as Bolton dominated West Ham but lacked the killer touch in an uneventful FA Cup fifth round tie at the Reebok Stadium.

Bolton's failure in front of goal meant they had chalked up five draws in a row while the Hammers missed out on a club record eighth successive win in all competitions and had to settle for a replay at Upton Park.

Bolton called the shots from the off. Ricardo Gardner went on a surging run in the sixth minute and picked out Kevin Davies in the penalty area. He rattled in a shot that was blocked by Danny Gabbidon.

The Hammers hit back and Dean Ashton found himself clear 20 yards out only to hoist his effort into the crowd.

Play swung back down the end and skipper Nolan saw his chip cleanly taken by goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

Bolton won a corner in the 15th minute and Stelios Giannakopoulos found Joey O'Brien, who had peeled away from his marker. However he failed to test Hislop with his header.

Bolton kept up the pressure and Nolan clipped a shot over the top of the bar in the 29th minute following a flick on from Davies.

Nolan was driving his team on and the midfielder saw his effort three minutes later cannon off Gabbidon.

The Hammers were struggling to make an impact in attack and Paul Konchesky tried to release Ashton with a glorious through ball in the 35th minute.

However goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was alert to the danger and raced off his line to foil the £7.25 million striker.

Then Konchesky linked up with Marlon Harewood but O'Brien, named in the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time this week, made a timely clearance.

Gary Speed almost gave Bolton the lead on his comeback heading narrowly wide in the 41st minute after good work by the industrious Davies.

The former Wales skipper had to leave the field immediately after with blood streaming from a cut on his head.

Bolton won a free-kick 20 yards out in the 48th minute after Davies had been blocked by Reo-Coker.

Nakata smashed his effort into the wall and Speed sent the rebound into the crowd.

The Hammers launched a quick counter attack in the 52nd minute with the impressive Konchesky whipping the ball into the area.

However Gardner was first to it and cleared his lines without any hesitation.

It was brief respite for the visitors with Nolan trying his luck from 20 yards, only to see his chip go wide.

Then Davies went close to making the breakthrough in the 55th minute, his toe-poke going inches the wrong side of the post.

Nolan kept finding himself in good positions but his finishing was not up to scratch and he sent a shot off target in the 59th minute.

Stelios then found the net for Bolton in the 63rd minute only for his effort to be ruled out for an infringement.

Ashton squandered a glorious chance a minute later, heading into the side netting following a cross from Matthew Etherington.

Stelios had a claim for penalty waved away when his shirt appeared to be tugged by Lionel Scaloni as Bolton stepped up the pressure.

Nolan saw his effort saved by Hislop in the 72nd minute with the Hammers being limited to counter attacks.

Bolton who continued to look dangerous with Speed heading wide late on and Nolan found the net in stoppage time but Jaidi was penalised for a challenge on Hislop.
