Blackburn turned in a five-star performance to make it three wins in a row and
keep alive their promotion play-off hopes.
Rovers were too hot to handle with winger Damien Duff leading the way with two
goals, supported by further strikes from Ashley Ward, Egil Ostenstad and Matt
Jansen
The result was never in doubt from the moment Irish star Duff put Rovers ahead
in the fourth minute, latching onto a brilliant flick from Ostenstad to send a
shot beyond Simon Tracey.
The visitors threatened only occasionally, but did manage to get the ball in
the net after 18 minutes only for the effort from Curtis Woodhouse to be ruled
out for offside.
Blackburn soon picked up the tempo again and Ward killed the Sheffield
challenge with a close-range goal after a brilliant short corner from David
Dunn.
The Blades made a bright start to the second half and Alan Miller, making his
Rovers debut, pulled off a superb save to keep out a long-range drive from Bobby
Ford.
Rovers were determined to give the goals for column a boost, and Ostenstad
made it 3-0 in the 67th minute.
A through-ball from Jason McAteer put the Norwegian clear and he expertly
rounded Tracey before supplying an ultra cool finish.
United responded with Woodhouse beating Miller, only for his shot to bounce
down off the crossbar.
Stuart Wilson was also unlucky when a shot was pushed over for a corner by
Miller.
But Blackburn still had the best goal of the afternoon up their sleeve eight
minutes from time. Jansen powered his way through finding Garry Flitcroft who
passed to Duff and the Irishman rifled home an unstoppable shot off the inside
of the far post.
But Rovers were not finished and in the last minute Jansen kept a cool head to
drive a left-foot shot beyond Tracey for Rovers' fifth goal.
