BLACKBURN ROVERS REPORTS 1999-2000

Blackburn 2 West Brom 1

Blackburn picked up three precious Division One points thanks largely to an inspired double substitution from manager Tony Parkes, who saw his side come from behind to score twice in six minutes.

The home side made it hard for themselves after Matt Carbon's 13th-minute opener, but after substitute Nathan Blake had set up fellow sub Keith Gillespie for the equaliser, it wasn't long before Christian Dailly slammed in Rovers' late winner.

The game started slowly with neither teams showing much imagination. The first chance fell to Rovers skipper Garry Flitcroft, whose side-foot effort from Jason McAteer's corner was easily dealt with by Baggies' keeper Chris Adamson.

But it was the visitors who struck first, Richard Sneekes' free-kick deflecting into the path of Carbon, who stunned the home crowd into silence by slamming the ball into the far corner.

Rovers left it until the final stages of the game to make a comeback and their winner came from the unlikely source of Dailly, who turned in the box to fire home his third goal of the season on the volley after Marlon Broomes had bravely headed on McAteer's free-kick.

In truth Rovers could have turned it into a rout had they made more of several good chances.

In the first half when Adamson's clearance deflected off Ashley Ward into the path of McAteer, the winger forced a great save from the keeper but should have scored.

As should striker Matt Jansen, who got on the end of Grayson's cross but saw his header sail hopelessly wide.

After the break Rovers controlled the play and matched their battling opponents tackle for tackle with no less than six Rovers players receiving yellow cards.

But goals were inevitable and captain Flitcroft thought he had equalised, but his header struck Blake and then the bar before sailing harmlessly over.

But to the relief of Parkes, Gillespie and Dailly's goals saved the day, making sure that a play-off place is still within reach.
