Birmingham slipped to a 2-0 defeat against German 2nd Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg in the Austrian Alps on Thursday night.

The Premier League side conceded either side of half time against their Bavarian opponents and despite improving in the second half, could not claw their way back into the match.

Summer signings Scott Dann and Roger Johnson teamed up in central defence but conceded when Tobias Werner beat Maik Taylor in the 23rd minute.

Elton Da Costa made it 2-0 in the second half.

Blues lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Marcus Bent making his first appearance on the club's tour of Austria, alongside Kevin Phillips and Garry O'Connor in attack.

Barry Ferguson also started the match, while the likes of James McFadden and Cameron Jerome came off the bench.
