Though van Persie once again grabbed the headlines with his 21st goal of the season, Welbeck secured the man-of-the match honours as United secured three more precious points in their bid to secure a 20th league championship.
They did not reach the final whistle without a few nervy moments for all the dominance they enjoyed in the first half after van Persie opened the scoring.
After United's second, which manager Sir Alex Ferguson awarded to Nemanja Vidic despite Patrice Evra initially claiming it, Danny Sturridge pulled one back for the visitors and drove a late shot into the side-netting.
Hailing the contribution of his fellow forward, van Persie said: "Danny played really well. He was good in the combinations and played a big part in the first goal.
"A couple of times when we got the ball after they made a mistake he got in and I got in a couple of times.
"He has been brilliant. He is still young and has been really good in training as well.
"He has been working his socks off. He is a very positive guy. He loves to play football and did really well."
On the second goal, Ferguson said: "It is going to the Dubious Goals Panel.
"It was a great header but I think it is good for us that Nemanja Vidic has become our 18th player to get a goal this year. I will give it to Vidic."
