Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw.
The bottom club will enter a round robin contest with the teams finishing second and third in Scottish Championship.
The top two clubs in the round robin will play in the Scottish Premier in the 2000-2001 season, with the club finishing last taking its place in Scottish Championship.
Should any of the top three teams in Championship not meet the Premier League's criteria for promotion then there will be a round robin contest and the team finishing bottom will remain in the Premier League.
Teams finishing level on points are separated by goal difference.
If goal difference is identical then the team scoring most goals finish higher. In the event of goal difference and goals scored being identical, aplay-off may be held necessary.
