Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is not interested in waiting until their showdown against Barcelona to clinch the Primera Liga title, insisting he hopes the decisive blow will be struck against Osasuna on Sunday.
Madrid's 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night left the reigning Spanish champions 10 points clear of second-placed Villarreal with only four games remaining in the season.
That means that no matter what happens elsewhere, Madrid will guarantee themselves their 31st La Liga title if they can beat Osasuna in Pamplona this coming Sunday - and that is what Calderon is hoping will happen.
"I would like to win the title as soon as possible. It would be great to win next Sunday because we would be able to celebrate the title in the remaining three games," said Calderon, whose side host arch-rivals Barca just a few days after visiting Osasuna.
Madrid could have won the title against Athletic on Sunday night if Villarreal had failed to beat Real Betis earlier in the evening, but the Yellow Submarine ensured any title celebrations were put on hold with a 1-0 win in Seville.
Despite that anti-climax there was still a party atmosphere at the Bernabeu, where an impressive Madrid eased past Athletic thanks to goals from Javier Saviola, Arjen Robben and Gonzalo Higuain.
Calderon said: "I've never seen the fans enjoy themselves this much - not once in the 30 years I've been coming to this stadium.
"We didn't win the league, but we did our job. We knew Villarreal would try to win their match. We must continue to concentrate hard.
"This league title will be more special for me because it will be my second. It will also be the first time we win two consecutive league titles in 18 years. I think we are doing a great job," added Calderon, who hopes Madrid can improve further still next season.
"We have to continue to think about winning more titles next year and learn from our mistakes. We have to improve on the quality of the team to play a better role in the Champions League."
With regards to any new faces arriving in the summer, Calderon added on his club's website: "I hope to make good signings, but I believe the core of the team has already been established."
