Bottom club Osasuna recorded only their second win of the Primera Liga season after blitzing in-form Getafe with a stunning first half display at the Estadio Reyno de Navarra.
The Pamplona-based side had only recorded one league success in 15 attempts prior to this match and had netted just seven goals in front of their long-suffering supporters.
Jose Antonio Camacho's side threw the form book out of the window in a magnificent 45-minute display though, scoring four times before half-time through Jaroslav Plasil, Juanfran, Walter Pandiani and Javad Nekounam.
Shell-shocked Getafe, who had taken eight points from their previous four games against Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal and Real Mallorca, at least managed to pull two goals back after the break through former Osasuna striker Roberto Soldado.
However, there was no miracle comeback for Victor Munoz's men as in between Soldado's two efforts they shipped a fifth goal to Hector Font as they missed the chance to go eighth.
Osasuna, who are still bottom despite the win, started the day four points adrift of safety and in desperate need of a good result, and they got a huge lift when Plasil put them ahead inside seven minutes.
The Czech Republic international would play an instrumental role in his side's success in this match, and he got the ball rolling by driving home Juanfran's cross at the far post.
Juanfran then turned goalscorer in the 35th minute to put the hosts 2-0 up with a 25-yard piledriver that visiting goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri got a hand to but could not keep out.
It was to get even better for Osasuna before the break though as they scored twice more in as many minutes.
The much-travelled Pandiani lashed home Osasuna's third from the edge of the box after latching onto a defensive header before Nekounam glanced in Plasil's free-kick to make it 4-0 soon after.
The Osasuna fans would have been over the moon following that remarkable first half, but they will also have been wary about celebrating too soon.
In the previous match here a fortnight ago Osasuna had built a 3-0 lead only to see opponents Real Valladolid score three times in the final half-hour to salvage a point.
And it was a similar tale of woe in the game before that as Osasuna, having scored two late goals to bravely fight back to 2-2 against Malaga, then conceded twice more in the closing stages to lose 4-2.
It was a different story today though, as Osasuna proved they were in no mood to hand out anymore early Christmas presents as they doubled their number of wins for the campaign.
Substitute Soldado will have caused a few nerves to flutter when he pulled a goal back for Getafe in the 65th minute with a good finish, but Font's 80th-minute tap-in restored Osasuna's four-goal advantage.
Soldado, who did not celebrate either of his goals, then netted his second with an acrobatic volley in injury-time, but it was nowhere near enough to deny Osasuna, who have now done the double over Getafe having also knocked them out of the Copa del Rey last month.
