Mark van Bommel is hoping Marco van Basten's decision to step down as Holland coach after Euro 2008 will pave the way for his return to the national team.
The Bayern Munich midfielder has not played for Oranje since the 2006 World Cup after a much-publicised spat with the coach.
However, Van Basten recently announced his decision to leave the post after next summer's European tournament and Van Bommel admits he would be happy to return to the national set-up under his replacement.
"I am glad Van Basten is leaving the Dutch national team," he told RTL7.
"I always feel it is an honour to play for Holland, it is therefore sour when you have to miss out on that.
"When Van Basten has gone I would love to play for Oranje again - if the new coach wants to select me, of course."
