RKC Waalwijk claimed just their second win of the Eredivisie season despite being reduced to 10 men at NEC Nijmegen.
Derk Boerrigter put the visitors in front after 32 minutes of a hotly-contested match which saw eight players booked.
Hans Mulder was sent off for two bookable offences after 80 minutes but basement boys RKC held on.
NEC had the first real chance after 14 minutes when John Goosens set up Bjorn Vleminckx for a shot at goal, but Vleminckx dragged his effort wide.
It took another 16 minutes for the home side to threaten again but Saidi Ntibazonkiza's shot was caught by Ohad Levita in the RKC goal.
And just two minutes later the visitors took the lead with a goal which would prove decisive.
Fouad Idabdelhay beat two players on the left wing before crossing for Boerrigter to turn the ball into the net.
Bookings were proving far more frequent than clear-cut chances and it took until the 63rd minute for NEC to come close to an equaliser.
Rein Baart's free-kick from 25 yards crashed back off the crossbar and was scrambled away by the RKC defence.
Seconds later Lorenzo Davids fired in a shot from the centre of the penalty area only to be denied by a superb save from Levita.
The ball ran loose to Ntibazonkiza but Levita reacted quickly to recover his composure and was in position to catch the striker's shot.
