Dwight Lodeweges has resigned as coach of NEC Nijmegen after losing faith in his ability to arrest the club's recent run of poor form.

NEC have not won in five Eredivisie games and suffered a 4-0 home thrashing by PSV Eindhoven at the weekend.

Lodeweges told the club of his intention to stand down this morning and he explained his decision on the club's official website.

He said: "I don't think I am the coach NEC need at the moment.

"I was not prepared for the current loss in form and I am not confident that I can change things in the short term.

"The board asked me to reconsider but I will stick with my original decision.

"I explained it all to the players and staff this morning and I hope they respect my decision.

"I do not blame anyone at the club and wish the players and staff success in the future."

NEC general manager Jacco Swart said: "We were naturally very surprised when Dwight handed in his notice.

"He has told us with honesty the reasons for wanting to quit. We asked him to have a good think about it because there was no obvious reason to go our separate ways.

"After he did so and came back with the same answer we decided to terminate his contract immediately.

"We are disappointed that he is leaving but respect his decision and his sincerity."

Wim Rip and Wilfried Brookhuis will take charge on a caretaker basis, starting with Wednesday night's KNVB Beker third round tie against Excelsior.
