Feyenoord moved up to fourth place in the Eredivisie as Denny Landzaat's goal proved enough to see off promoted VVV Venlo 1-0 on Saturday.
The result took the Rotterdam giants level on points with third-placed Ajax, who take on AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.
Mario Been's team dominated the first half and Diego Biseswar was heavily involved in the first opening in the 17th minute, playing a give and go with veteran striker Roy Makaay before putting his left-foot shot wide.
Andwele Slory drilled another effort off-target three minutes later before the home side forged ahead after 26 minutes.
Makaay's ball into the box should have been easy for Venlo goalkeeper Kevin Begois to deal with, but he made a hash of it and Landzaat was on hand to score.
Slory fired one over the top just before the break and in a second half low on clear-cut chances, Biseswar drilled another effort over the crossbar with 20 minutes to go.
Keisuke Honda's free-kick with 15 minutes left was VVV's first effort on goal in the game, but Rob van Dijk managed to block it.
The Japanese livewire was involved with two minutes to go as his shot was blocked by Feyenoord defender Andre Bahia before ken Leemans' follow-up was fielded by Van Dijk.
Adil Auassar had VVV's final chance to equalise in the last minute but headed a cross from the right over the crossbar.
