PSV Eindhoven won a fourth successive Eredivisie title on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 win at Vitesse Arnhem.

Sef Vergoossen's side just needed a draw to secure the championship but won thanks to Danko Lazovic's goal a minute into the second half.

Ajax, the only club who could have caught PSV, had to win and hope for a Vitesse victory but their 5-1 thrashing of Heracles was in vain.

PSV had failed to confirm their 21st league title following a 1-1 draw with FC Twente last weekend, and they were made to sweat on a final day result after Ajax cut the gap to three points following a 2-1 midweek win against Groningen.

But PSV never looked like relinquishing their advantage as they comfortably held on to herald celebrations from the travelling fans at the final whistle.

The result rendered Ajax's impressive display at home to Heracles irrelevant as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was among the scorers to finish as the league's most prolific marksman with 34 goals for the season.

Kenneth Perez scored twice either side of the break with Luis Suarez and Johnny Heitinga - who will leave for Atletico Madrid at the end of the season - also on target.

Excelsior suffered final-day heartbreak as they were relegated following a comprehensive 5-0 defeat away to Heerenveen - who confirmed their Champions League play-off place.

The Rotterdammers had begun the day a point above bottom club VVV Venlo, knowing they only had to match or better their result to avoid automatic relegation.

However, after VVV clinched a vital 3-0 win at home to De Graafschap, defeat confirmed Excelsior's return to the second tier of Dutch football after a two-season stay in the top flight.

Gerald Sibon hit a double for Heerenveen in addition to strikes from Miralem Sulejmani, Geed Arend Voorda and a Sigourney Bandjar own goal to book a two-legged Champions League play-off tie against Ajax.

VVV's win sets up a relegation play-off re-match with De Graafschap.

After a goalless first half VVV went ahead in the 56th minute when visiting defender Joost Volmer put the ball into his own net.

Nordin Amrabat struck seven minutes later before Rachid Ofrany made the points safe in the 83rd minute.

Feyenoord had to be content with a place in the UEFA Cup play-offs despite a 3-0 home win over 10-man Roda JC.

Luigi Bruins, Nuri Shahin and Michael Mols all scored after Marcel De Jong's 63rd-minute dismissal, but Heerenveen's win ensured Feyenoord could not finish their disappointing campaign any higher than sixth.

Matthew Amoah gave third-placed NAC Breda a 27th-minute lead only for a Jermain Lens double to inspire NEC Nijmegen to a 3-1 win.

Jhon van Beukering was also on target for the visitors, who finish the season in eighth - good enough for a UEFA Cup play-off place.

NAC will meet FC Twente in their Champions League play-off tie after the Enschede club claimed a 2-0 win at Willem II - with Youssouf Hersi scoring both goals.

AZ Alkmaar and FC Utrecht warmed up for their UEFA Cup play-off matches with 1-0 victories against Sparta Rotterdam and FC Groningen respectively.

Mounir El Hamdaoui struck AZ's winner after just 14 minutes while Erik Pieters proved Utrecht's match-winner a minute after half-time.
