Goals from Javier Saviola and Oscar Cardoza saw Everton's Europa League hopes suffer a setback at Goodison Park as they lost 2-0 to Benfica on Thursday night.
Benfica completed the double in Group I thanks to a rousing second half performance to cement their place at the top.
Saviola opened the scoring in the 63rd minute and Cardozo made the points safe eight minutes later.
Roma came from behind to beat nine-man Fulham 2-1.
The result leaves the Cottagers third in Group E, two points behind the Italians and four points behind leaders Basle.
It all looked so different at half-time, with the Premier League side leading through Diomansy Kamara's penalty.
But after Erik Nevland was sent off, goals from John Arne Riise and Stefano Okaka turned things round before Paul Konchesky also saw red in the closing stages.
Celtic's hopes hang by a thread after a goalless draw at Hamburg.
Hoops' striker Scott McDonald missed two glaring sitters as the visitors edged an open first half.
The Parkhead side, though, had goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska to thank for a series of fine saves. But despite an encouraging performance overall, Celtic remain at the bottom of the table on two points - five behind second-placed Hamburg with two Group C games remaining.
