Maik Franz went from villain to hero as he scored Eintracht Frankfurt's winner against 10-man Bochum, whose new head coach Heiko Herrlich saw his reign open with a 2-1 defeat in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Caio opened the scoring in the 14th minute for the hosts only to see Franz score an own goal after 25 minutes to level the scores.

Franz, however made up for his miscue with the decisive goal in the 53rd minute before Bochum went a man down with 10 minutes to go as Shinji Ono was given his second booking.

Frankfurt collected just their second win in the last six Bundesliga games to move into ninth place on 16 points - just four points from the European spots.

Bochum, meanwhile, remain 17th place with just eight points and four from the last eight games.

Maicosuel's first-half goal was enough for Hoffenheim to grab an important 1-0 away win at Freiburg and jump to fifth place.

The visitors controlled the game throughout and enjoyed the majority of the chances, but had only the solitary goal to show for their efforts.

Hoffenheim have won six of their last eight games and their 20-point tally leaves them in fifth place - three points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who moved to the top of the Bundesliga with a 2-2 draw at Schalke on Saturday night.

Goals from Toni Kroos and Stefan Kiessling gave Leverkusen a two-goal lead at half-time but Schalke, who came from behind to snatch a point at home to Hamburg last weekend, repeated that feat with late goals from Kevin Kuranyi and Vicente Sanchez.

Both sides knew they could go top following the early results and it looked as if Leverkusen would win.

However, Schalke responded well in the second half. Kuranyi gave the Royal Blues hope in the 83rd minute when he kept his cool in a goalmouth scramble to force the ball over the line.

And Schalke completed a remarkable recovery when Sanchez headed the ball into an unguarded net.

Earlier Borussia Monchengladbach had twice came from behind before handing Hamburg their first loss of the season - 3-2 - and robbing them of a chance to top the Bundesliga.

Piotr Trochowski gave Hamburg the lead in the 13th minute only to see Marco Reus equalise after 39 minutes.

Ze Roberto put the home side ahead again in the 47th minute but fellow Brazilian Dante equalised again in the 76th minute and Rob Friend gave Gladbach victory eight minutes from time.

Aaron Hunt scored twice in the final 18 minutes as Werder Bremen came back from a two-goal deficit at Nurnberg to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Christian Eigler put Nurnberg ahead in the third minute and Albert Bunjaku made it 2-0 after 33 minutes.

But Hunt struck in the 72nd minute and then two minutes into injury time, allowing Werder to extend their unbeaten streak to 17 games.

Mainz also fought back from a two-goal deficit and snatched a point five minutes from time in a thrilling 3-3 draw at defending champions Wolfsburg.

Obafemi Martins scored in the seventh and 20th minutes to give Wolfsburg a 2-0 lead but Chadli Amri struck in the 35th minute and Andreas Ivanschitz made it 2-2 shortly before the interval.

Zvjezdan Misimovic gave Wolfsburg the lead again after 64 minutes but Tim Hoogland equalised again for Mainz in the 85th minute.

Jan Rosenthal's first-half goal was enough for Hannover to grab an away victory at Cologne as the guests welcomed back Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke.

Meanwhile, struggling Stuttgart held Bayern Munich to a goalless draw.

On Friday night, Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 win at home to bottom club Hertha Berlin.

Nuri Sahin's penalty on the hour and Lucas Barrios' unstoppable strike in injury time sentenced Hertha to their sixth away defeat in six so far this season.

The nearest the visitors came was in the 75th minute when Lukasz Piszczek was within inches of an equaliser, his stinging right-foot shot hitting the post from the edge of the penalty area.
