Werder Bremen are set to benefit from the enlargement of the G14, the group that represents Europe's leading clubs, according to their general manager Thomas Kurth.

The G14, which regularly meets to discuss the future of the domestic and European game, is made up of 18 clubs at present, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen already representing Germany.

But with both Dortmund and Leverkusen enjoying only limited success over the past five years, Bremen feel their time has come to step up.

Kurth told the Handelsblatt newspaper: "The 22 best-placed teams in the UEFA five-year co-efficiencies will be added to the current 18 club members, and that will be the club which has performed the best over the last five years, which in Germany, for example, would be Werder Bremen."

Bremen have played in the Champions League for the past three years and, aside from Bayern, have been Germany's most consistent performer on the European stage.

Last month, the G14 said it would expand to around 50 clubs by the end of the year in bid to improve relations with both FIFA and UEFA - who have until now refused to recognise the authority of the G14.
