Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld coach was left disappointed with his side's UEFA cup performance on Thursday despite a 1-0 win over Portuguese side Belenenses.
The Bundesliga leaders are favourites to claim the competition but were laboured in securing their victory and now face a tricky task in the second leg.
"I am disappointed with the result, we expected more," said Hitzfeld.
Bayern will still go to Portugal expecting to progress after not conceding an away goal but Belenenses coach Jorge Jesus believes his side are capable of an upset.
"I am really happy with the result which leaves us a few chances in the return leg," he said.
Meanwhile Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Nurnberg all claimed useful results to leave them well placed going into their second legs.
Leverkusen all but booked their place in the group stage after defeating Leiria 3-1 at the BayArena.
"It is a good position to be in," admitted coach Michael Skibbe, who added that the 3-1 win "was more than deserved."
Hamburg's 1-0 away win in Lovec on Tuesday means they too are favourites to proceed to the next round while Nurnberg drew 0-0 at home with Rapid Bucharest and know that a score draw in Romania will see them through.
"Nil-nil is an average sort of result," said coach Hans Meyer. "We played very good football and let them have only a few chances and I cannot criticise my team."
