Rennes and Valenciennes go into their Ligue 1 clash tomorrow separated by just five goals but with both sides aware they need to win to maintain contact with the leaders.
Both won last weekend and are currently on 16 points, six off leaders Bordeaux.
While hosts Rennes have won three games at the Route de Lorient, Valenciennes have also claimed three victories on their travels - so there is little to choose between the sides.
Rennes defender Rod Fanni knows the team must focus if they are not to slip up and said: "It is at home, so we must win. But we do not expect an easy game.
"Valenciennes are
a clever team. They leave the game to their opponents and counter-attack very well.
"So far, we've manage to beat the the so-called weaker teams.
"We can target the top five, but there are still many things to improve. We must concentrate."
Valenciennes manager Philippe Montanier drew his players' attentions to the questions the Red and Blacks will pose, saying: "We must be aware of the quality of this team, both defensively and offensively. They are outsiders for the championship.
"For us, it's a real good test after Lyon. We will be able to see if we can compete with one of the top six sides in France."
Of the number of absentees, he added: "After three to four months of intensive training, the hospital is filled - and there are also suspensions. But I remain confident we have a quality group."
