Toulouse overcame the early dismissal of goalkeeper Yohann Pele to earn a superb point at the Stade Velodrome.
Moussa Sissoko's free-kick gave Toulouse the lead but Brandao levelled in the second half.
Pele was given his marching orders after surging out of his penalty area to bring down Mamadou Niang, with Paulo Machado sacrificed for the introduction of substitute custodian Olivier Blondel.
But the 10 men had the better chances in the first half, with Andre-Pierre Gignac first to threaten as a low shot went wide of the left-hand post and another fierce effort was blocked on the line by keeper Steve Mandanda.
Blondel made a great save from Lucho Gonzalez's 20-yard drive before the visitors took the lead in the 28th minute.
Moussa Sissoko powered in a right-footed free-kick from 20 yards which flashed into the top corner of Mandanda's goal.
Blondel then countered Lucho's stunning volley with an excellent save to preserve the lead until the interval.
Marseille came out after half-time in search of an equaliser, and Mathieu Valbuena's bicycle kick was kept out in equally acrobatic fashion by Blondel.
Albin Ebondo had the chance to make the points secure for Toulouse but Mandanda turned his effort over the bar.
And that save proved crucial as Blondel's error was seized upon by Charles Kabore and Bakari Kone set up Brandao to score with a scissor kick across goal with 15 minutes remaining.
Gignac cleared Kabore's effort off the line after a poor punch from Blondel, but the substitute keeper made himself a hero with two minutes remaining as he brilliantly denied Brandao to earn his side a draw.
