The supporter accused of racially abusing Valenciennes defender Abdeslam Ouaddou during Saturday's Ligue 1 game at Metz appeared before the French public prosecutor on Monday charged with a "public racist insult".
The case was adjourned and the accused will appear in court on March 18, French sports daily L'Equipe reported.
The French professional footballers union (UNFP) have called for organised protests before next weekend's games against the incident and others which have been "repeated in our various championships".
The UNFP declared their shock in a statement on Monday.
"We want all the families of French football to unite against a plague which corrodes our national sport," they said.
Ouaddou has indicated on Valenciennes' website he will hold a press conference on Wednesday morning in the company of club president Francis Decourriere and coach Antoine Kombouare.
Meanwhile, two Metz-supporting brothers aged 21 and 26 were sentenced to nine months in prison after a nine-year-old girl, sitting next to the window, suffered serious head injuries when they threw stones at a Valenciennes supporters bus after Metz's 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Both were also banned from the stadium for five years.
