Alan Shearer netted two minutes from time to earn Newcastle a point at Liverpool after the hosts had led 2-0 in a breathless encounter at Anfield.
The Magpies skipper headed home a Laurent Robert corner from the left flank to delight the travelling fans and deny the Reds the victory that would have sent them to the top of the table.
That had looked on the cards as they led through goals from Dietmar Hamann and Michael Owen.
German midfielder Hamann had put the Reds in front against his former club with a cool finish on 53 minutes before Owen appeared to seal the victory with his first goal of the season - a 73rd-minute penalty.
But Gary Speed slotted home in the 80th minute after good work by Craig Bellamy down the left to set up Shearer's late heroics, which snatched his side a hard-fought draw.
Shearer put Newcastle's late show down to the spirit within the club.
"There's a great spirit in this side," said Shearer, who also paid tribute to Robson.
"He's got this attitude that we're never beaten."
Hamann was unhappy his side had surrendered a two-goal lead.
"2-0 up at home should be enough," he told Sky Sports.
"If we want to win the league we've got to win the three points, we can't give two points away like this."
