Antonio Barijho netted twice as
Grasshoppers Zurich continued their superb early season form with a 4-1 win over
FC Thun.
Grasshoppers, who are now six points clear at the summit after picking up
their seventh win in eight matches, took the lead after only eight minutes
through Barijho.
It took the Zurich-based club until the 56th minute to double their lead when
Ricardo Cabanas netted, but there was little doubt as to where the points would
end up when Barijho put his side 3-0 up in the 79th minute.
Yao Aziawonou pulled one back for Thun a minute later but Grasshoppers still
had time to grab a fourth through Mate Baturina five minutes from time.
Grasshoppers enjoy such a healthy lead at the top of the table because the
club closest to them, Basle, suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Lucerne.
Reigning champions Basle, who had the only unbeaten record before today,
looked good value to pick up their fifth win of the season as Christian Gimenez
and Juilio Rossi cancelled out an early strike from Alex Monteiro to put them
2-1 up at the break.
And the scoreline stayed that way until six minutes from time when Diango
Malacarne drew Lucerne level.
However, worse was to follow for the home side four minutes later when Silvio
Enrique popped up to grab a late winner as Lucerne, who have been deducted four
points for financial problems, sneaked only their third victory of the season.
A 2-0 home win over SR Delemont saw Young Boys move level on 12 points with
third-placed FC Zurich, whose match against bottom club Aarau has been moved to
tomorrow.
Thomas Haberli put Young Boys ahead after 36 minutes before Johan Berisha
completed the scoring on the stroke of half-time.
The other match played today in Switzerland saw Neuchatel Xamax beat St Gallen
1-0 thanks to Augustine Simo's 87th-minute strike.
