Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is determined to recruit a striker in the January transfer window.

The Spanish boss is short of cover following the prison sentence imposed on Marlon King, with Hugo Rodallega and Jason Scotland carrying the weight of the striking duties.

Martinez said: "We are light up front as we have lost Marlon King, which was unexpected.

"That is something we will have to look at and do something in the next window.

"We need to strengthen as we have lost a player and cannot leave ourselves open.

"We know our budget, the money we have to spend. But it is not just about that.

"It is about finding the right players and personalities. We will work on different markets to try and make things happen."

Rodallega has shown his touch in front of goal but Scotland has yet to get off the mark going into the Premier League match against Fulham on Sunday.

It is a different story to last season when the 30-year-old contributed 24 in all competitions for Swansea.

Martinez, however, believes there is more to Scotland's game than goals having worked with the player in the Championship.

Martinez said: "Jason has a great belief and a great arrogance in his play, certainly since we defeated Chelsea.

"He may be waiting to score but he is contributing to the team in a big way. It is a sign of a good striker when you give a lot to your team without getting goals.

"His overall play is exceptional in that respect. I am delighted with him and all the players who have had to adjust to the Premier League."

Wigan's form has been topsy-turvy and they lost heavily to struggling Portsmouth last weekend.

Now Martinez want his side to get back on track at home.

He said: "It is important we learn our lessons after all the things we did wrong. The feeling in the camp is that everyone is desperate to get out and perform against a very good Fulham side.

"I believe we can get stronger. We've had fantastic high points and a few low points. But it is normal because we have had a big turnaround of players.

"We are working together and sometimes you get that lack of understanding when things are new. But inconsistency is something we need to eradicate."

Swedish full-back Erik Edman could return to the side after recovering from concussion.

His comeback would be a boost for Wigan as he is a straight replacement for Maynor Figueroa, who is sidelined with a knee injury.

Martinez added: "Erik had a very good pre-season then had a couple of injuries that disrupted things and slowed him down.

"He is now back in training and we look forward to seeing him on the pitch, making sure he enjoys his football."
