Brad Guzan has thanked Brad Friedel for helping to improve him as a goalkeeper at Aston Villa as he revealed his desire to challenge for a first-team spot.

Guzan was given the chance to show his capabilities in the Peace Cup and helped Villa defeat Juventus on penalties in the final after the game finished goalless.

But Guzan, who saved two spot-kicks in the shoot-out, has still to make a Barclays Premier League appearance since making a £2 million move from Chivas USA 12 months ago.

Guzan said: "Everyone sees the level Brad is at. It is not just a year here and there that he does the business.

"It is consistent year in and year out and that is what you want out of a top goalkeeper game in and game out and to help the team.

"The Premier League is the best in the world with the best players in the world.

"So, when you are around it in training day in and day out, you are going to get better and for me it is no different and I've learnt a lot from Brad."

Guzan is hoping he can eventually stake a claim for a regular first-team spot under Martin O'Neill.

He said: "With any position in any team, you wait your chance and, when you get your chance, you hopefully take it.

"You never know when it is going to come or if Brad was to get hurt a month into the season or for the last game.

"I would like to think I am getting closer to the level Brad is and instilling confidence into the coaching staff and the team-mates that they can count on me.

"In terms of that, things are going in the right direction."
