1705: Watford have signed Stoke captain John Eustace on a two-and-a half year deal. Reader Paul Nixon reckons Glen Whelan and Wes Hoolahan are possible replacements.

1646: Aston Villa have been thwarted in their attempts to sign USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan after they failed to obtain a work permit for him. Villa boss Martin O'Neill had lined up a £2million move for the Chivas USA custodian as he looked to bolster his goalkeeping options.

1641: Manchester City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson had been linked with a move to Galatasaray but Johan Eriksson has brought us some quotes from Tord Grip in the Swedish press today. Grip says: "He could go on loan to Galatsaray, then he wouldbe able to play. But he doesn't want that and there is not much more that we can do."

1638: San Lorenzo's attempts to sign Real Zaragoza midfielder Andres D'Alessandro have stalled, according to the player's agent.

1635: Bury have signed Wolves midfielder Elliott Bennett on loan until March 1. The 20-year-old spent time at Crewe earlier this season, and has now been sent out on loan again by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

1450: Dundee United manager Craig Levein has given his reaction to the news that Barry Robson is set to join Celtic. He says: "Both myself and the chairman would have preferred Barry to remain a Dundee United player, but he made it abundantly clear on a number of occasions that he wanted to move on. He felt that at his age, he had one last chance of a major contract and we couldn't persuade him otherwise. He's a fantastic player, greatly admired by the chairman and myself and we wish him well."

1446: The Stewart Downing story has more twists than a Scalectrix track - if our latest emailer is to be believed. Lee Dott claims after the collapse of the Gilberto deal, Spurs are "apparently close to agreeinga deal for Downing".

1443: Sunderland boss Roy Keane says he has turned away a host of clubs interested in signing Daryl Murphy. His actual quote is: "Murph's going nowhere". Which seems pretty conclusive.

1440: Duisburg have confirmed the signing of Fernando Horacio Avalos from Portuguese club Funchal until 2009. The 29-year-old is Duisburg's fifth signing of the January transfer window and has joined for an undisclosed fee.

1431: Back to the serious business and there's some good news for Middlesbrough fans. Sadly it's not confirmation of the signing of Afonso Alves yet, but Andrew Taylor and Josh Walker (the latter currently on loan at Aberdeen) have penned new deals.

1428: Ben Blair has tried to pull the wool over our eyes by claiming Santiago Munez (star of Goal) has been spotted at Newcastle's training ground this lunchtime. Nice try, Ben.

1424: Further to Gary Jefkins' email earlier, Ian Higgs claims to have seen "Stewart Downing in Liverpool this afternoon having a walk around flanked by a load of suited guys." If true, the plot thickens...

1420: FC Groningen have signed former Millwall striker Berry Powel from Eredivise rivals De Graafschap, subject to a medical. The 27-year-old will be a direct replacement for Erik Nevland, who joined Fulham.

1415: Mark Nicol has entered our 'spottings' competition (which has no prize other than transfer centre kudos) by claiming he's heard that Celtic's Scott Brown was being shown round Rangers' training facilities this morning. That surely can't be true? Can it?

1410: Sam MacKerras, a regular contributor for us this January, says "it's official" in regards Benjani Mwaruwari's move to Manchester City and says it has cost 13.1m Euros. He also says Jermain Defoe has moved to Portsmouth for 12m Euros. However we have yet to receive official news of this yet so stay tuned for confirmation.

1405: Ian Betley has emailed in an opinion shared by the Bolton fan in our office. He says: "Gary Megson and Phil Gartside are responding well in the transfer market after the loss of Anelka. They have decided since he is irreplaceable and they only had two months notice that they better work on the principle of buying as many defenders as possible." Well said!

1359: Following on from recruiting Colin Nish, Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen made his second signing of the day as Algerian Abderaouf Zarabi agreed to move to Edinburgh.

1325: Benjani Mwaruwari is reportedly close to completing a shock move to Manchester City. Portsmouth are already desperately short of firepower having lost David Nugent and Nwankwo Kanu to injury but according to Sky Sports News they could now be close to selling their star striker.

1235: Even bigger news just in from Holland and Marco van Basten has confirmed he has held talks with a delegation from Eredivisie giants Ajax. The current Dutch boss will step down from his post after Euro 2008 and has been strongly linked with the top job at the Amsterdam ArenA.

1230: An update from Holland now and midfielder Orlando Engelaar is set to sign a new deal at FC Twente to keep him at the club until summer 2011. The 28-year-old has reportedly attracted interest from Ajax and Portuguese side Porto, but Twente chairman Joop Munsterman said he was close to extending his stay at the Arke Stadion.

1222: Blackpool winger Michael D'Agostino hasextended his loan spell at League One outfit Cheltenham until the end of the season. Robins boss Keith Downing is "delighted".

1220: Staying in Scotland, Jim O'Brien is joining Dundee United on loan from Celtic. South of the border, Lee Bullock has completed a permanent move to Bradford from Hartlepool. The 26-year-old midfielder has signed an 18-month contract after impressing during a loan spell.

1217: Celtic midfielder Jiri Jarosik is reportedly set to join Russian club FC Krylya Sovetov Samara. His agent Pavel Zika is quoted as saying: "It is set to be signed."

1200: Charlton have accepted an offer - understood to be in the region of £4million - from Sunderland for midfielder Andy Reid while defender Greg Halford may go in the opposite direction with a loan move to The Valley.

1155: Hardly the most ground-breaking of the day's transfers, but Bradford defender Simon Ainge has joined Halifax on loan until the end of the season.

1150: Scunthorpe have completed the loan signing of Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield until the end of the season.

Meanwhile Bristol City winger Kevin Betsy has joined League One promotion chasers Walsall until the end of the season.

1140: The transfer of Gilberto from Hertha Berlin to Tottenham Hotspur has collapsed, according to the Bundesliga club.

The player underwent a medical in London on Sunday and both clubs had reached an agreement over a fee, however the deal has been called off after results of a second medical today "prevented a contract between the player and Tottenham Hotspur from being concluded to the original conditions".

1135: Birmingham have reportedly rejected a bid from Coventry for Martin Taylor. The Sky Blues are believed to have made an offer in the region of £1million for Taylor, but the Blues didn't want to sell.

1132: There's been a couple of transfers in Spain's Primera Liga. Firstly Villarreal have boosted their ranks with the loan signing of Uruguayan international Sebastian Eguren while Racing Santander have made their third signing of the transfer window by bringing in Sergio Daniel Orteman on loan.

1130: Manchester City have pulled out of a deal with Schalke to bring Soren Larsen to the club, according to sources in Denmark. Shalke had reportedly accepted a transfer bid of around £3.7million but City have seemingly withdrawn their interest in the Danish striker.

1125: Iraq will step in to appeal the British Government's decision to deny its top player Nashat Akram a work permit to join Manchester City. Iraq's football president Hussein Saeed said: "I don't know why this has happened, he is an exceptional player, capable of playing in the English Premier League."

1120: Ipswich are also poised to snap up Plymouth midfielder David Norris, who is currently undergoing a medical. A deal was agreed between the two clubs yesterday with the fee likely to be in the region of £2million. Well done Stuart Spall for finding that before anyone else!

1115: Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater is set to join Ipswich on loan untill the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move. The paperwork should be completed very soon. Thanks to Andre De Havilland for alerting us to that one.

1110: Doncaster have cancelled Bruce Dyer's contract by mutual consent. The striker has been blighted with injury over the past couple of seasons and has seen first-team opportunities at Keepmoat Stadium limited this term.

1100: Coventry have rejected Nottingham Forest's new bid of £1.25million for Leon Best. The League One club have been chasing the striker all month but after another failed attempt, you just have to wonder if they'll get there man with just over 13 hours to go.

1050: Reading teenagers Alex Pearce and James Henry have joined Glenn Roeder's Norwich on loan. Pearce, 19, will stay at Carrow Road until the end of the current campaign while Henry is on an emergency loan until 28th April.

1045: Tottenham have ruled out a move for Newcastle's Charles N'Zogbia. Earlier today N'Zogbia's agent claimed the Frenchman would like a move to White Hart Lane but Spurs have dismissed reports they made an approach for him.

1035: Portsmouth have reportedly launched a late bid for Tottenham's Jermain Defoe. According to the Daily Mirror, Harry Redknapp last night put in a £9million bid for the striker. The news comes after Manchester City reportedly made a bid for Portmouth's top goal scorer Benjani.

1030: Watford have signed Sheffield United defender Leigh Bromby for an initial £600,000 fee.

1020: Manchester United youngster Manucho is set to be loaned out to Panathinaikos for the rest of the season. The striker is well down the pecking order at Old Trafford and they want him to gain valuable first-team experience with the Greek giants.

1006: Gary McAllister could be poised to make a significant signing for Leeds after Stockport accepted their bid for striker Anthony Elding.

0955: Mohamed Sissoko has claimed he rejected overtures from Newcastle and Tottenham to join Juventus from Liverpool. "A lot of people were interested in me, notably Tottenham and Newcastle," said Sissoko.

0945: Overseas news now and Auxerre have bolstered their squad with the double signing of Julien Quercia from Sochaux and Vlad Munteanu from Wolfsburg. Quercia, a France Under-21 forward, joins for around one million euros on a three-and-a-half-year deal while Romania midfielder Munteanu, 27, has been drafted in on loan until the end of the season, with the prospect of signing him permanently in the summer.

0920: Derby boss Paul Jewell has revealed Newcastle are not prepared to increase their bid for Giles Barnes. Speaking after last night's 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City, Jewell said: "They said they wouldn't be coming back with more than they've offered - which I'm pleased to hear."

0915: News from Germany and Japan international midfielder Shinji Ono completed his move from Asian champions Urawa Reds to German Bundesliga side Bochum.

0910: Deportivo La Coruna have completed the loan signing of Sweden international Christian Wilhelmsson. The 28-year-old winger was on a 12-month loan at Bolton from Nantes but he struggled at the Reebok and now joins Depor until the end of the campaign. However there is no option to buy for the Spanish club.

0855: However Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is expected to complete the short-term signing of Georgian midfielder Levan Tskitishvili who has been released by Greek side Panionios.

The Blues have also been linked with a move to sign Tottenham's Anthony Gardner, but whether that deal happens remains to be seen.

0845: Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan has revealed his disappointment at failing to sign Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill who has instead opted to move to Bolton. He said: "This is a player we chased very hard, but in the end despite matching the best offer that Villa received and then making him the best personal financial offer, Gary decided that saw his future playing career away from the midlands."
