Bolton manager Gary Megson has dedicated the superb UEFA Cup victory against Red Star to the club's supporters.

Before the match in Belgrade on Thursday night, hundreds of fans, many on the official trip, were detained in a hotel in the capital.

The Serbian police banned them from visiting the city centre because they feared clashes with Red Star supporters.

Their actions caused outrage but the day ended well, however, for the travelling army.

Bolton becoming the first British team to win at the Marakana thanks to Gavin McCann's first goal for the club in their last group game.

Depending on results in the final round of matches, they are with a chance as well of progressing to the last 32 of the competition.

Megson said: "Hopefully the result will go some way to appeasing the fans a little bit.

"The team have done well to create a little bit of history as well.

"It was not right people were kept in a paddock as they had done nothing wrong.

"I have to thank them for coming. We were aware they had been kept behind and were not being treated as people should in a foreign country.

"I am sure the police and the authorities made that decision in good faith but it was not right."

It was a remarkable result given that Megson had opted to leave most of his key players behind.

He thought they would be better off training at Euxton under coach Archie Knox ahead of the crucial match against Wigan on Sunday rather than travelling to eastern Europe.

Megson now wants an action replay of the Belgrade spirit when they face their fellow strugglers at the Reebok Stadium.

He believes they can kick on and claim a place in the top ten rather than facing a long relegation battle.

Megson said: "Each side we name has got to put in that kind of effort, honesty and drive.

"If we continue to do that hopefully we can achieve our target of making the top ten.

"We have a nice problem when it comes to selection after the result in Belgrade on a paddy field.

"Every player has a chance to prove what he can do and we go into every game looking to win it."
