David Beckham has been ruled out of the Los Angeles Galaxy's SuperLiga clash against Chivas Guadalajara on Saturday night after failing to recover from an ankle injury.
The former England captain, 32, has been receiving treatment on the problem daily since making his debut as a late substitute for the Galaxy against Chelsea last Saturday.
He has not trained with his new team-mates either, and on Friday head coach Frank Yallop said Beckham would not be taking any part in the group game with the Mexican giants at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
"He's not out here today and he won't be playing tomorrow," Yallop said following Galaxy training at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
"He's doing better, the soreness is going, but it comes in spells of a couple of days.
"He gets a lot of work done on it but then it gets sore. The work is helping it, though, and the soreness is getting lighter and lighter.
"It's frictional work, really getting the scar tissue out. That's been the problem, it's been getting congealed in there and getting really tight, which constricted any type of movement and caused pain.
"So they've really worked hard to move that and it's feeling a lot better."
Yallop revealed the lengths Beckham had gone to in an attempt to make Saturday's clash.
"He's doing a lot of other work, on a stairclimber, on a bike, and fitness wise it won't be an issue," he said of the former Real Madrid star's return.
"Obviously game sharpness is different to what he's doing in a gym but I think David's proved he's a pretty fit kid anyway.
"It's just a matter of time really, and I think once he gets out here and gets his boots on he'll be close to getting ready to go."
Galaxy travel to Texas next week for Tuesday night's final SuperLiga group game against FC Dallas and Yallop insisted Beckham's chances of appearing in that game were better than 50 per cent.
