Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric has targeted "three or four" more new signings as the Foxes prepare for a promotion challenge in the coming Coca-Cola Championship season.

New Foxes boss Martin Allen has already made 12 new signings this summer - including striker DJ Campbell from Birmingham in a deal which could eventually be worth £2.1million - but Mandaric insists he will continue to hand Allen his chequebook in pursuit of promotion.

Mandaric told Sky Sports News: "We're still looking to improve the squad and we need a creative midfielder and defender.

"We still could make three or four new signings before the start of the season.

"That would take our signings to 16 which is the right number as that's a whole team and five on the bench.

"We are aiming for the Premier League but it's going to be very hard and competitive and an interesting season.

"We want a top-five finish and that is what I expect."

The Foxes had made an offer for former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler but Mandaric revealed that Allen was happier to snare Campbell after Fowler completed a move to Championship rivals Cardiff.

He said: "Well to be honest the manager preferred to have DJ and that meant we didn't go after Robbie as aggressively."

Mandaric defended the fee paid for Campbell - who Allen bought for Brentford for just £5,000 in 2005 - and insisted he is "a great player".

He said: "Well I wish I was on the other end, buying him for £500,000 and then selling him for £2million, but that is football.

"But we are very happy to have him here and we're delighted.

"He's a great player and the manager has a lot of faith in him."
