England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson admits his thoughts immediately after the
World Cup were that "we should have done better, we could have beaten
Brazil".
However, Eriksson claims his batteries are "recharged" after his summer
break and he is set for his first scouting mission of the season at Elland Road
on Saturday, where Leeds play Manchester City.
The Swede told the FA's official website, www.thefa.com, how he has moved on
mentally from the World Cup in Japan and South Korea and now has his sights set
on the forthcoming European Championships qualification campaign.
"As you can imagine, when we went out of the World Cup, for the next few days
after I was thinking 'we should have done better, we could have beaten Brazil,
and so on,"' he admitted.
"But I also took the opportunity to relax a little. That's the good thing
about being a manager of a national team - you can't buy or sell players! When
you are manager of a club you are on the phone every day. But as national team
manager I was able to take a short break. Now I feel recharged and I'm looking
forward to the season."
Eriksson also revealed that he is anxious to meet up with his players again as
the friendly with Portugal at Villa Park on September 7 looms.
"Of course, having been together for so many weeks during the World Cup, I
feel as though I know the players who were in the squad very well now. It shall
be good to see the them again."
