Turkey finished third in the World Cup after beating South Korea 3-2 in the play-off match at Daegu.

The match mirrored the whole tournament with a blistering start giving way to a tame second half.

Hakan Sukur lit the touch paper for the first-half fireworks with a World Cup record goal.

Just 10.8 seconds had elapsed when the previously goalless striker side-footed home after Ilhan Mansiz robbed Korean skipper Hong Myung-Bo, who had stood on the ball straight form the kick-off.

But within nine minutes, the co-hosts were level with a superb goal.

Bulent tripped the excellent Chong-Gug Song 25 yards out and Eul-Young Lee stepped up to curl the free kick past Recber Rustu and into the top corner.

The lead lasted barely three minutes as the Korean defence, missing the brilliant Choi Jin-Cheul, were caught out by an interchange between Hakan Sukur and Mansiz and the striker, making his first start of the campaign, was on hand to tuck the ball away

The action flowed to and from but the Sukur-Mansiz axis undid the Koreans again just after the half hour.

A quick interchange sent Mansiz clear and he beat the advancing keeper with the most delicate of chips.

After such a start, it was almost inevitable the second period would fail to live up to it.

Rustu made a string of saves as the Koreans, urged on by their fanatical fans, tried to get back into the game.

But all they had to show was an injury-time consolation from Chong-Song Gug whose 20-yard snap shot was deflected past Rustu.
