Eduardo grabbed a second-half brace as Ligue 2 side Guingamp came from behind to stun Brittany rivals Rennes in a thrilling Coupe de France final and claim the first major piece of silverware in their history.

Rennes looked as if they were going to end their 38-year wait for a trophy when USA captain Carlos Bocanegra put them in front at the Stade de France with 21 minutes remaining.

But Guingamp - who are still not safe from the drop into France's third tier - fought back and Brazilian striker Eduardo slid home two clever finishes in the space of 11 minutes to earn his team their first cup triumph and a spot in next season's Europa League.

It was their third win over Ligue 1 opponents in this season's competition, following victories over Le Mans and Toulouse, and it allows coach Victor Zvunka to make up for the disappointment of losing the 2004 final when in charge of Chateauroux.

Rennes' only chance of qualifying for Europe now lies in finishing in the top five in the league - they are currently seventh in the division.

Last month's Coupe de la Ligue final had also pitched a Ligue 1 side against second-division opposition, and on that occasion top-flight giants Bordeaux thrashed beleaguered Vannes OC 4-0 in a one-sided showpiece.

Thankfully, tonight's match - played in front of a tournament record crowd of 80,056 - was an altogether different story, with a determined Guingamp giving as good as they got.

The underdogs have the best defensive record in Ligue 2 and they showed why here, keeping Rennes relatively quiet in a hard-fought, goalless first half.

Indeed, Guingamp had arguably the better of the early chances, the highly-rated Eduardo seeing a shot tipped around the post by Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez, who then parried away Richard Soumah's close-range attempt.

Rennes only really got on top towards the end of the first half and veteran playmaker Jerome Leroy - a winner of this competition with Sochaux and Paris St Germain - was unlucky to see his 25-yard half-volley crash against the bar in the 40th minute.

Moussa Sow did likewise seven minutes after the break when he ran onto Leroy's delightful flick and, without a defender in sight, thundered his shot against the woodwork.

Leroy volleyed wildly over when well-positioned just after the hour mark and it was one-way traffic by that point, with Rennes deservedly taking the lead in the 69th minute.

It was a simple goal, Bruno Cheyrou whipping in a free-kick from the right and Bocanegra rising highest in a crowded penalty area to glance a header home into the corner.

No sooner had they gone ahead than the Ligue 1 side were pegged back two minutes later, conceding their first goal in this season's competition.

A speculative high ball into the area was poorly dealt with by the Rennes defence and Eduardo reacted quickest by slipping a low, left-footed shot past Douchez from 10 yards.

The Brazilian then clinched the trophy for Guingamp, who were bottom of Ligue 2 two months ago, with a fine finish in the 82nd minute after great work by Lionel Mathis.
