St Etienne coach Alain Perrin wants his team to build on their encouraging display against Ligue 1 leaders Lyon last weekend when they take on Caen tomorrow.
Les Verts drew 1-1 with their neighbours and arch rivals but could easily have come away from the Stade Gerland with three points.
It was a repeat of what happened the previous weekend, when St Etienne over-ran Le Mans but were forced to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw.
Perrin is happy with how his players are performing but would prefer substance over style this weekend, with the team fourth from bottom in the standings.
"You only have to look at our position in the table and I think the players are conscious of that," he said.
"We have to go for the victory. Taking into account the difficult schedule we have to come, we have to avoid a repeat (of the last two weeks) to give ourselves room to manoeuvre.
"Only a win will do if we are to build on the point obtained at Lyon."
St Etienne's last victory in the league came against Auxerre in their final match before the winter break, but Caen have to go further back for their most recent win.
That was also against Auxerre, on November 22, and they have been in freefall since, picking up only three points from a possible 18. Indeed, St Etienne will go level with Caen if they win at home tomorrow.
Caen have no fresh injury worries whereas Les Verts have a doubt over the fitness of Cedric Varrault (thigh).
