Southend boss Paul Sturrock has been named npower League Two Manager of the Month after overseeing an impressive November for the Shrimpers.

Paul Sturrock: Five wins from six enough to take November honours

Southend moved from mid-table into the play-off places with five wins from six league games, beating fellow contenders Torquay 4-1 in impressive fashion at Plainmoor to end their unbeaten home record.

Southend's unbeaten run lifted them into sixth place in the table and that was enough to see off the claims of Chesterfield manager Paul Cook and Exeter's Paul Tisdale to win the prize.

Sturrock said: "We were really disappointed about last year and I think we had a wee bit of a headache start this season, but the players have done really well since and the staff has worked tirelessly so I'm very pleased.

"Any way we can get up is the words we would use, with a new stadium on the horizon we need to be pushing ourselves up the league."

Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa was named player of the month after scoring seven goals in five league outings, including a hat-trick in the Cobblers' 4-2 win at Accrington.

Cobblers manager Aidy Boothroyd told the club's official website: "I think the fact that are players are now getting recognised individually shows that as a team we have come a long way.

"Bayo will be the first person to point to his team mates for the support he's got to win this award. When I came into this job a year ago I inherited a player who was overweight and we had some pretty honest and forthright conversations.

"Bayo took everything on board and credit to him he's lost two stone and he's playing really well. He can run around now, he can still do all the things that he did before but he's added to that.

"As a person everybody loves him and as a footballer I'm sure you love playing with him and hate playing against him. I'm absolutely delighted for him, he's a genuine guy and we are all really pleased for him to get this award."
