Heynckes Schalke link rejected

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has laughed off speculation linking coach Jupp Heynckes with Bundesliga rivals Schalke in the summer.

Jupp Heynckes: Linked with Schalke

Heynckes will leave Bayern at the end of the season when his contract expires, making way for Pep Guardiola.

He has yet to confirm whether or not he will be retiring and Schalke have reportedly emerged as a front-runner for his services, although Hoeness has played down the link.

"I cannot imagine it in the slightest," he told Kicker magazine.

"That's got to be a bit of an April's Fool."

Schalke director of sport Horst Heldt neither confirmed nor denied the speculation, saying Heynckes' name is unlikely to be the only one linked to the Royal Blues' hotseat, which will also become vacant in the summer when Jens Keller's short-term contract expires.

"We have nothing more to say about it," said Heldt.

Heynckes, 67, has coached Schalke in the past, lasting little over a year before being dismissed in 2004.

He then had spells with Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern, twice, and is on course to lead the Bavarians to a record 22nd Bundesliga title this season, while they are aiming for an historic treble with the DFB-Pokal and Champions League.

They meet Borussia Dortmund in the last eight of the domestic cup and face Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League.
